A long-time black-belt, Guybson Sá returned to the mats in the best possible way, putting traditional Jiu-Jitsu into practice. At the Charlotte Summer Open last month, an IBJJF tournament held in the United States, where Guybson Sá teaches, he won three gold medals, competing in both Gi and No Gi. In a total of five fights, he had four submissions, a performance that filled the athlete with motivation.
“It was really cool to fight again in a place where I’ve competed many times, alongside the public that has always supported us in the competitions. I felt very focused, with a good pace and the positions working at the right time. I thought I did very well, but I need to adjust some parts of my game for the World Master. I had a total of five fights with four submissions, many types. I competed with opponents who are active in the scene and we had very tough fights. I liked the way I felt on and off the mat, before and after the competition.”.
Gold at the World Master, in Vegas, will break Guybson’s silver streak at the tournament
The Worlds mentioned by Guybson is the IBJJF’s international event for masters athletes, scheduled for the end of August in Las Vegas. The best athletes over 30 years old from all over the world will be present at this tournament. In an interview with VF Comunica, Guybson said that he hopes to win the gold this season, considering that he already has four silver medals in World Master. Based on his performance in the most recent IBJJF competition, this is a very real possibility.
“I have four silver medals from the World Master and this year I want to change this. I think what will help me a lot will be past experience and adjusting to the mistakes that took me out of first place.”.
Spartan Academy in South Carolina is elected best academy
In addition to his return as an athlete, Guybson Sá has another reason to celebrate. Spartan Academy, the martial arts academy he runs in South Carolina, won the award “Best Martial Arts Facility” in the region, an acknowledgment that elevates the academy to a high level and makes it a reference for potential new athletes.
“We are extremely honored to have received the award for best martial arts facility in the state of South Carolina. It has been many years of struggle, organization, commitment to the community and helping many people who are part of our family here. It makes me happy to see that our legacy has taken root here in the US and that one day we will have a story similar to that of my father, Mestre Sá, who started it all in Ceará.”.
Having all this commitment validated by a selective award did not happen by chance. At Spartan Academy, a training center with different modalities available, each part of the academy receives full attention from the team. Respect for schedules and a complete structure are some of the priorities.
“Our work is taken very seriously here at the academy. Every day we try to offer the best to our students. Starting with cleanliness, class structure, discipline with the schedules, mutual respect among everyone and, most importantly, real Jiu-Jitsu, with a professor who is always present, seeking the best for the entire group.”.
