Who is Leandro Lo
Leandro Lo was born on the east side of São Paulo on May 11, 1989, and started Jiu-Jitsu in 2004 at Projeto Social Lutando Pelo Bem, a social project run by Cícero Costha, who later gave him his black belt. A juvenile world champion in 2005, he went years without competing at the Worlds after the tournament moved to the United States, because he could not afford the trip. In 2011, already a black belt, he won the World Pro in Abu Dhabi and came to be seen as one of the top names of his generation.
At the IBJJF World Championship he won at lightweight in 2012 and 2013, middleweight in 2014 and medium-heavyweight in 2015, 2016 and 2022. The 2018 open class title came without a match: he was injured, and his friend Marcus Buchecha gave up the final so Lo could have the gold. The 2019 heavyweight gold came to him after the original champion was disqualified for doping.
Lo died on August 7, 2022, at age 33, after being shot in São Paulo, two months after winning his eighth world title. The IBJJF inducted him into its Hall of Fame the following year.
