Daniel 220v

Daniel Gomes Costa Barbosa, known as Daniel 220, was born in 2012 and is one of the best-known names in Brazilian kids Jiu-Jitsu. A two-time ADCC Youth World champion, in 2024 and 2026, he has also won the World Pro in Abu Dhabi four times, ADXC four times and the CBJJ Brazilian Nationals Kids five times.

He grew up in Chatuba de Mesquita, in the Baixada Fluminense area outside Rio de Janeiro, and started Jiu-Jitsu at 5 at Projeto Galo Association under coach Douglas Santos. When he was 9, his parents built a high-performance training program for kids, something hard to find at the time, designed for him and his training partners. In that period he learned from master Jonathan Frazão and from the late Edil Rodrigues, who played an important role in his development.

Today he competes for 220 Pro Team, a high-performance team in the gi and no-gi. When Jonathan Frazão opened his own academy, the team hired four more coaches: Gutenberg and Pedro Lucas for Jiu-Jitsu, Renzo for luta livre and Rodrigo Braguinha for no-gi. In September 2026 he was promoted to green belt by Pedro Lucas and Renzo.

His first ADCC Youth World title came in 2024 in Las Vegas, with a win over Icaro Moreno in the final of the 11 and 12-year-old, under 40 kg division. He is a four-time ADXC winner, with wins such as a rear-naked choke on Matheus Fonseca in Rio de Janeiro and a kimura on Mukhammad Akaev in Moscow. In 2026 he won the South American Kids, the European Kids in Dublin and the Brazilian Nationals Kids, took bronze at the Pan Kids and won the ADCC Youth World Championship again in Austin, submitting Paxton Holmes and Caio Sainz with rear-naked chokes. His specialty is attacking from the back, especially with the bow and arrow choke and the rear-naked choke.

Projeto 220, the social project he created with his parents, is now part of 220 Pro Team. The team has more than 20 scholarship athletes from communities in Rio de Janeiro. They train at no cost, more than six hours a day, with the same preparation as the high-performance athletes. “Jiu-Jitsu changed my life and taught me that with discipline, dedication and hard work, we can go very far,” Daniel says.

His idols in the sport are Bruno Malfacine, Mica Galvão and Fabricio Andrey.
