UFC BJJ 12 is happening this Thursday, October 8, at the Meta APEX in Las Vegas. UFC BJJ is the grappling league of the UFC: there are no strikes, and the athletes try to win by submission. The night already has a new Brazilian champion. Renato Canuto beat Canada’s Ethan Crelinsten by unanimous decision and won the lightweight title, which was vacant.

Earlier, Gilbert “Durinho” Burns, who had said he would go for the submission, tapped to a heel hook from fellow Brazilian Gabriel Almeida in the first round. Five of the seven matches ended by first-round submission, and Brazilians Thaynara Victoria and Raphael Ferreira also won. Only the main event is left: Cassia Moura vs. Adele Fornarino for the women’s flyweight title.

Play-by-play: match by match

The matches are listed from the most recent to the first of the night.

Renato Canuto vs. Ethan Crelinsten (lightweight title)

Canuto started with a foot sweep and a takedown. Crelinsten attacked a leg, swept and took the back, but the Brazilian escaped and locked in an anaconda choke. Crelinsten did not tap and got out, and the round ended with Canuto close to a foot lock.

In the second round, Crelinsten pulled guard and Canuto attacked from the top. Crelinsten defended and came up on top, and Canuto then got back to side control. When he tried to isolate an arm, Crelinsten escaped and went back on top. Late in the round, Crelinsten tried a leg lock, Canuto got out and put on pressure from the top.

In the third, Crelinsten charged in and the two almost went over the edge of the Bowl, the UFC BJJ competition area. Canuto controlled from the top, took the back, locked a body triangle and looked for the rear-naked choke. He then locked in a reverse D’Arce choke, which Crelinsten defended. Both athletes tried heel hooks in the last seconds, and the match went to the judges: unanimous decision for Canuto, the new UFC BJJ lightweight champion.

Gabriel Almeida vs. Gilbert Burns (middleweight)

Burns defended a guillotine attempt and got a takedown, but Almeida defended and the match went back to even. Near the end of the round, Almeida was the one who took Burns down. He went after the neck, switched to Burns’ left leg, locked the position and adjusted the heel hook. Burns tapped at 4:34.

It was Almeida’s first match in UFC BJJ. Burns, a former UFC welterweight title challenger, had won his UFC BJJ debut by submission in June.

Thaynara Victoria vs. Danielle Kelly (women’s strawweight)

In her UFC BJJ debut, Brazil’s Thaynara Victoria went to the mat early and attacked a straight ankle lock, which Danielle Kelly defended. Both athletes then attacked each other’s legs at the same time, nobody could finish, and they stood back up. The next time the match went to the mat, Kelly tried to get on top, and Victoria isolated her arm, adjusted her legs and finished the armbar at 2:53.

Landon Elmore vs. Max Livingston (lightweight)

Elmore scored a big takedown, but Livingston escaped and the match went back to the center. When Livingston shot for a takedown of his own, Elmore locked a body triangle from the bottom, swept and ended up on top. From there he controlled one of Livingston’s legs and finished with a straight ankle lock at 3:42. Elmore came in after two decision losses in a row at featherweight and now has two wins in UFC BJJ.

Kade Anastasios vs. Ataide Rafael (welterweight)

American Kade Anastasios, who earned his place on the card through UFC BJJ Opens, set the pace from the start. In the middle of the round he attacked the knee of Brazil’s Ataide Rafael, who freed his leg and escaped for a moment. Anastasios stayed active from the bottom, controlled Rafael’s right heel and locked in the heel hook at 4:29.

Raphael Ferreira vs. Kyle O’Hare (featherweight)

Referee Vitor “Shaolin” Ribeiro gave both athletes a warning early in the match. Raphael Ferreira, a 19-year-old Brazilian, got on top and held O’Hare with a body lock. O’Hare broke free and tried to attack from the top, but he ended up in Ferreira’s guard. Ferreira isolated the foot and finished the heel hook at 3:14. It is his second win in UFC BJJ.

John Chandler vs. Raphael Gomez (lightweight)

The first match of the night went to the judges. Gomez pulled guard several times in the first two rounds and attacked with a guillotine and a heel hook. Chandler escaped both and worked from the top, moving through side control and north-south. In the final round he picked up the pace, got a takedown, reached mount and came close to finishing an arm-triangle choke. Chandler won by unanimous decision and now has two wins in UFC BJJ.

What is still to come

Cassia Moura vs. Adele Fornarino is the final of the Grand Prix and decides the first women’s flyweight champion of UFC BJJ. Moura, 20, is unbeaten in five matches in the organization, already holds the bantamweight title and can become the first athlete with two UFC BJJ titles at the same time. Australia’s Fornarino, a two-time ADCC world champion, won both of her UFC BJJ matches by first-round submission.
