Hazel Butcher-Salazar

Hazel Rose Butcher-Salazar is an American from Madison, Wisconsin, and trains at Alliance Madison. She started Jiu-Jitsu in 2021 and reached black belt in less than five years. In some announcements the IBJJF calls her Hazel Rose.

In 2024, as a blue belt, she won all four IBJJF Grand Slam tournaments in the juvenile division: Europeans, Pans, the Brazilian Nationals and Worlds. In 2025, now a purple belt competing as an adult, she won double gold at Pans and Worlds at age 17.

At brown belt in 2026 she repeated the Grand Slam. She won heavyweight at Europeans, where she lost in the open class to Nikolett Kis, and won double gold at Pans, the Brazilian Nationals and Worlds. According to Hazel, no one scored a point on her at those three tournaments. She got her black belt right after Worlds.

As a black belt she has had nine matches and won all nine. By her own count, all came by submission: two at the Chicago Summer Open in August and seven at the Jiu-Jitsu CON in September. In Las Vegas she beat Maria Alencar at heavyweight and in the open class, and Maria Vitória Ruffatto-Gilpin in the open class final. Both are in the Crown bracket.

Born in 2007, she is the youngest of the six athletes confirmed for the super-heavyweight bracket on November 8.
