Who is Gabi Garcia
Gabrielle Garcia was born in the southern Brazilian state of Rio Grande do Sul on November 17, 1985, and played volleyball, handball and field hockey before she found Jiu-Jitsu. She moved with her family to São Paulo at 13 and got into the sport through an uncle. Already training with Fabio Gurgel at Alliance, she left a career in advertising to focus on competing.
At the IBJJF World Championship she won her weight class in 2008, while still a brown belt, in the division that combined brown and black belts, and again in 2010. In 2011 and 2012 she won both her weight class and the open class. In 2013 a drug test taken at the Worlds came back positive and her results at the tournament, including the open class title, were disqualified; the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) found she was not at fault and gave her no suspension.
She was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.
