Gilbert “Durinho” Burns did not look for excuses after his loss at UFC BJJ 12. A few hours after Gabriel Almeida submitted him on Thursday, October 8, in Las Vegas, the Brazilian posted a video on social media, admitted his mistake and congratulated his opponent.

“No sad stories! I got careless with my foot, Gabriel went for it and caught it well, congrats to him! Heading home to rest and get better, and I’ll be back soon! Thank you, UFC BJJ,” Burns wrote in the caption, in Portuguese.

How the submission happened

The middleweight match lasted less than one round. Near the end of the five minutes, Almeida got a takedown, threatened the neck, switched his attack to Burns’ left leg and locked in a heel hook, a leg lock that twists the heel and puts pressure on the knee. The referee stopped the match at 4:34.

It was Almeida’s first match in the organization. The Checkmat black belt is 34 years old, was born in Niteroi, Brazil, the same city as Burns, and lives in Long Beach, California. After the match, UFC BJJ wrote that he “put the Middleweight division on notice.” His story is in Who is Gabriel Almeida.

Burns’ first loss in UFC BJJ

Burns, 40, ended his MMA career in April and went back to competing in no-gi jiu-jitsu, the version of the sport without the traditional uniform. In his UFC BJJ debut, in June, he needed 1 minute and 22 seconds to submit Horlando Monteiro with a rear-naked choke at UFC BJJ 9.

Before the match with Almeida, he was already talking about a title shot and had said he would go after the submission from the start.

Burns has been at the top level of jiu-jitsu for a long time. Before his MMA career, in which he fought for the UFC welterweight title, he won the IBJJF World Championship as a black belt in 2011, beating Kron Gracie in the final.

“I’ll be back soon”

In his message, Burns did not give a date or name an opponent for his return. He only said he is going home to rest and get better. The heel hook that stopped him was one of the moves of the night in Las Vegas: four of the five submissions at UFC BJJ 12 were leg locks.

All the results are in the UFC BJJ 12 play-by-play.
