Who is Sergio Moraes

Sergio Moraes won the 2011 Worlds at medium-heavyweight with a sweep in the closing moments of the final against Rômulo Barral. The title for Alliance was his second at black belt, after gold in 2008, and came a year before he swapped the mats for the UFC Octagon.

Born on July 23, 1982, in Cohab, a housing project on the outskirts of São Paulo, he started Jiu-Jitsu as a teenager in a social project under Everdan Olegário. At brown belt he moved to Fernando Tererê’s TT and later joined Fabio Gurgel’s Alliance. A brown belt world champion in 2006, he received his black belt from Olegário the same year.

At his first Worlds as a black belt, in 2008, he submitted Kron Gracie, who was debuting at the rank, and went on to win the middleweight title. In 2009 he took silver, with Alliance teammate Marcelo Garcia on top, and in 2010 he took bronze. In 2011, besides the world title, he beat James Harbison and Braga Neto at ADCC. In 2012 he joined The Ultimate Fighter Brazil, reached the final in place of the injured Daniel Sarafian and lost to Cezar Ferreira at UFC 147. In the UFC he went 8-3-1, earning a Submission of the Night bonus for a triangle on Neil Magny in 2013 and beating Tim Means and Ben Saunders in 2018. He left the promotion after losing to James Krause in November 2019.

His last recorded MMA fight was in October 2020, at Taura MMA. In Jiu-Jitsu he returned for BJJ Stars superfights, beating Luis Marques in 2020 and losing to Vagner Rocha in 2025. He has taught at Evolução Thai in Curitiba and in Bahrain.
