Who is Guilherme Mendes
Guilherme Mendes was born in Rio Claro, in the interior of São Paulo state, in 1988, and started training in 2001 with his younger brother, Rafael, after a cousin took them to class. At the academy the two met Ramon Lemos, who became their coach and main mentor and led them through stints at Nova União, Brasa and Atos.
A world champion at every colored belt, he got his black belt in October 2008, at the same time as Rafael. At black belt he won the IBJJF World Championship at light-featherweight in 2009, 2011, 2012 and 2014.
He and his brother founded Art of Jiu-Jitsu in California. The two entered the IBJJF Hall of Fame together, in 2022.
