Who is André Galvão
André Luiz Leite Galvão was born in São Sebastião, on the coast of São Paulo state, on September 29, 1982, and grew up in the Paraíba Valley, where he started in judo. His first Jiu-Jitsu coach was Luis Carlos Dagmar, known as Careca, who sent him to train with Fernando Tererê when he was 16. As a purple belt he became the first athlete at that rank to win the Worlds, the Pans and the Brazilian Nationals in the same season.
At black belt he won the IBJJF World Championship in three weight classes: middleweight in 2005, medium-heavyweight in 2008 and 2017, and heavyweight in 2014 and 2016. The IBJJF awarded him the 2014 title after the tournament, when the original champion failed a drug test.
He leads Atos, the team based in San Diego, California, and was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2022.
