Who is Xande Ribeiro
Alexandre Couceiro Ribeiro was born in Manaus, in northern Brazil, on January 20, 1981, and started training at age 10 with the Monteiro brothers, who gave him the nickname Xande. At 18 he moved to Rio de Janeiro to study law and began training at Royler Gracie’s academy, where his older brother, Saulo Ribeiro, was already one of the top competitors. Saulo gave him his black belt in March 2001.
At the IBJJF World Championship he won the heavyweight division in 2004, 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2015, and also took the open class in 2006 and 2008.
He and Saulo moved to San Diego, California, where they opened the University of Jiu-Jitsu and founded the Ribeiro Jiu-Jitsu association. He was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014 and kept competing after that, with superfights as recently as 2025.
