Kaynan Duarte was suspended for one year for an anti-doping rule violation. The black belt, then 22, tested positive for ostarine in an in-competition test at the IBJJF World Jiu-Jitsu Championship on June 2, 2019.

What ostarine is

Ostarine, also known as MK-2866 and enobosarm, is a selective androgen receptor modulator, classified as an anabolic agent and banned at all times under the World Anti-Doping Code. According to USADA, the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency, it is not available as a prescription medication in any country and is often found in dietary supplements, whether or not it is declared on the label.

The reduced sanction

The agency said Duarte received a one-year reduction. After reviewing the evidence, and with the athlete’s cooperation, USADA concluded that the trace amount of ostarine in his sample was consistent with exposure through cross-contamination. A laboratory accredited by the World Anti-Doping Agency confirmed that a product belonging to a person close to him contained ostarine, as listed on its label, and could have been the source.

The sanction

The sanction was announced on February 7, 2020. The one-year suspension counted from June 2, 2019, the day the sample was collected. His results since May 30, 2019, the day Worlds began, were disqualified, with forfeiture of medals, points and prizes. The IBJJF agreed to impose the sanction.

USADA was contracted by the IBJJF to run testing at the tournament. The details are in the statement published by the agency.
