Rafael Gamba on the Crown 2026 bracket: “It’s not a superhero against a human being”

In an exclusive interview with VF Comunica, the brown belt world champion says he would not accept the invitation if he was sure he would lose to anyone; his black belt debut is at middleweight on November 8

Rafael Gamba will have his first match as a black belt in one of the toughest brackets of the year. The Alliance athlete is in the middleweight division of the Crown 2026, set for November 8 at the Walter Pyramid in Long Beach, California, next to names like Mica Galvao, Jackson Nagai and Tarcisio Santos. In an exclusive interview with VF Comunica, he said he respects his opponents but does not see any of them as unbeatable.

“It’s not a superhero against a human being. A lot of people get that confused. Everybody is the same, everybody has two arms and two legs,” he said, in Portuguese.

“I wouldn’t even leave my house”

For Gamba, the decision to accept the IBJJF invitation already answers anyone who asks if he believes he can win the tournament. “If there was someone in that bracket I was sure I would lose to, someone I looked at and thought, ‘I’m sure I can’t beat this guy,’ I wouldn’t even leave my house and I wouldn’t accept the challenge,” he said.

The black belt also talked about what being a champion means to him. “The true champion is not only the one who wins and doesn’t lose. The true champion is the one who accepts the challenge and puts himself to the test against the best,” he added.

A black belt debut after a year of titles

Gamba comes to the Crown after a dominant season at brown belt. In 2026, he won the European, Brazilian National and World championships at middleweight. At the Europeans and the Brazilian Nationals, according to the IBJJF, he submitted every opponent. At Worlds, in June, he won his first three matches with triangle chokes, beat Emerson Feitosa in the final and received his black belt on the podium.

The November tournament is his first event at the new rank. Instead of starting at an open tournament, Gamba begins at an invitation-only event with eight athletes per division. His titles and recent matches are on the Rafael Gamba profile page on VF Comunica.

Who is in the middleweight bracket

Among the confirmed names, the division has Mica Galvao, who will compete at the Crown for the first time, Jackson Nagai, the 2024 world champion and last year’s Crown finalist, Tarcisio Santos, Jose Steve, Leonardo “Leleo” Souza and Uanderson Ferreira. The details are in the story on the Crown 2026 middleweight bracket.

The Crown is in its fourth edition and has eight-athlete brackets, all decided on the same night. To take the title and the $20,000 paid to the champion of each division, an athlete has to win three matches.
