Caio Almeida: “The greatest quality of a champion is loyalty to your own dream”
The leader of Almeida JJ, a team that has produced world champions from blue to black belt, says hard work, discipline and consistency matter more than talent, money and structure

Caio Almeida has spent his life building champions. He has a clear answer when people ask what separates those who get there from those who stop on the way. For the leader of Almeida JJ, a Jiu-Jitsu team from São Paulo, Brazil, the difference shows up far from the podium, on the days when nobody is watching and the medal does not come.
“For me, the greatest quality of a champion is loyalty to your own dream. It is to keep working when nobody is watching. It is to keep training when the result does not come,” the coach said.
Caio also talked about the moments when giving up looks like the easy way. “It is to stay loyal to your purpose even when a difficulty, a loss or an easier chance to give up shows up.”
Talent, money and structure help
The black belt agrees that the things people usually call advantages do matter in an athlete’s career. But in his view, none of them keeps a competitor going for long without a work routine.
“Only those who are loyal to their purpose reach the extraordinary. Talent helps. Money helps. Structure helps. But the main thing will always be hard work, discipline and consistency,” he said.
From Itaquera to the top of Jiu-Jitsu
His own story supports his words. Caio was born on February 2, 1986, in Itaquera, a neighborhood on the east side of São Paulo. He received his black belt from Gabriel Vella in December 2009. With his brothers Diogo and Gustavo, he founded Almeida JJ. The team has produced world champions from blue belt, the second belt in the sport, to black belt.
The best-known name from the team is Bianca Basílio, a world champion and a champion of the ADCC, the biggest no-gi grappling tournament in the world. The results keep coming with the younger athletes. At the 2026 IBJJF South American Championship, Almeida JJ had two brown belt champions.
The project also has a bigger home. In January 2025 the team opened an expanded training center with four official-size mats. The goal is to become one of the biggest training centers for young athletes in Brazil.
