Who is Roleta
Roberto Magalhães, known as Roleta, was born in Aracaju, in the northeastern Brazilian state of Sergipe. He spent his teens in karate, even though his older brothers trained Jiu-Jitsu, and only changed his mind at 17, when he watched a class and saw a technique that would have helped him in a street fight. He started with Joe Moreira and stayed with him through purple belt.
Set on making a living from Jiu-Jitsu, he moved to Rio de Janeiro to train at Gracie Barra with Carlos Gracie Jr., who took him to black belt. He won the IBJJF World Championship in 1996, the first edition of the tournament, and again in 1997, 1998 and 2000. In the same period he won the Pans four times.
He now leads his own team, Roleta Jiu-Jitsu. He has been in the IBJJF Hall of Fame since 2014.
