Mario Reis

Mario Reis won the featherweight world title in his first year at black belt. In 2003, for Winner-Behring, he submitted Fredson Paixão with a triangle in the semifinal and beat Alexandre Soca Carneiro 8-4 in the final. In 2004, now with Brazilian Top Team, he won the title again by beating Fredson 2-0 in the final.

A Porto Alegre native born in 1979, he came up in Sylvio Behring’s lineage. He was a blue belt world champion in 2000 and took bronze at brown belt in 2002. He became known for an aggressive style both from guard and when passing, and for the triangle, his favorite submission.

He stood on the black belt Worlds podium nine years in a row, from 2003 to 2011. After his two titles he took silver in 2005, 2006 (at lightweight) and 2007, and bronze from 2008 to 2011, a period in which he faced the generation of Rubens Cobrinha and Rafael Mendes. He was also Pan champion in 2005 and European champion in 2006 and 2009.

After six years at Gracie Barra he joined Alliance in 2011. As a coach in Porto Alegre he helped develop athletes such as Nicholas Meregali and Monique Elias.
