Who is Marcos Juruna
Marcos “Juruna” Barreto started training in 1978 at Monir Salomão’s academy in Vila da Penha, in Rio’s North Zone, and built his whole career there. In 1996, at the first Worlds, he beat Nikos Bahlzetis in the roosterweight final to become world champion.
That same year he also won the Pans at roosterweight, beating Marcelo Andrade in the final. An heir to Oswaldo Fadda’s lineage through Monir, he took over his master’s academy after Monir’s death and was one of the founders of Equipe Supreme.
He now teaches in Vista Alegre. On May 31, 2026, he was honored by the IBJJF at the ceremony marking 30 years of the Worlds, alongside the first world champions, at the Pyramid in Long Beach.
