Who is Jalen Fonacier
Jalen Fonacier was not yet old enough to drink in the United States when he won his first Worlds as a black belt. A year later, at 20, he did it again in Long Beach and lived up to the nickname he has carried since childhood: “The Future.” The American from Alliance now owns roosterweight, the lightest division in men’s Jiu-Jitsu.
Michael Jalen Fonacier was born on August 9, 2005, in Los Angeles, California. He first stepped on the mat at age 2, brought by his father and an uncle to Rey Diogo’s academy, a Carlson Gracie lineage school. While still a yellow belt he switched gyms to train under Rubens Charles, known as Cobrinha, at Alliance Los Angeles. He has been there ever since.
He got his black belt on May 31, 2024, at age 18, from Cobrinha, after a winning run through the colored belts: juvenile Pans champion in 2021 and 2022, juvenile open class world champion in 2022, No-Gi Worlds and No-Gi Pans champion at purple belt in 2023, and Pans and Worlds champion at brown belt in 2024.
His first full season as a black belt, 2025, already ended with the world title. It was a year in which he and Yuri Hendrex traded finals: Hendrex took Europeans, 2-0, and Jalen got him back at Pans by referee decision. At Worlds he submitted two opponents, got past Thalison Soares in the semifinal by one advantage and beat Carlos “Bebeto” Oliveira in the final.
He opened 2026 with Europeans in Lisbon, won with three submissions in three matches. Pans brought a stumble, a 2-0 loss to Marcos Gomes in the quarterfinals. In Long Beach, Jalen got back on track: three submissions on day one, an 8-6 win over Yuri Hendrex in the semifinal and, in the final, a rematch with Thalison Soares that ended 2-2 and was decided on advantages.
Outside the IBJJF calendar, he also competes in UFC BJJ, where he has not lost. He is 4-0, with three of those wins by heel hook. The fastest was over Bebeto Oliveira in February 2026, in 19 seconds. The most recent, on August 20, 2026, was a unanimous decision over Mourece Ramirez.
