Fedor

Gabriel Lyrio made his black belt Worlds debut in 2015, less than two years after his promotion, and left Long Beach as the ultra-heavyweight champion. He took Leo Dávila’s back for the submission in his first match, advanced without fighting against the injured Leo Nogueira and Alexander Trans, and won the final against GF Team’s Ricardo Evangelista 3-2 on advantages after a 0-0 score.

Born on August 3, 1990, in Vitória, Espírito Santo, he started karate at 8 and only found Jiu-Jitsu around 15, when a gym opened near his home. His first instructor took him to purple belt. He then moved to the academy of Eduardo “Jamelão” da Conceição, who gave him his brown and black belts, the latter on August 1, 2013, right after a season in which he won the brown belt world and Brazilian titles. Before becoming a champion he lost about 35 kg. Training partners gave him the nickname Fedor because he looked like the Russian fighter Fedor Emelianenko.

In no-gi he won the 2014 No-Gi Pans and took silver at the 2014 No-Gi Worlds, losing the final to Yuri Simões. In 2015, besides the world title, he won the ADCC São Paulo trials. In 2018 he had superfights at ACBJJ, beating Ricardo Evangelista and Vinny Magalhães, and won the ACB Asian Open. In 2019 he was runner-up at the ADCC São Paulo trials, losing the final to Braga Neto. His last recorded results are from 2020, two losses to Seif-Eddine Houmine.
