Who is Amy Campo
In December 2021, Amy Campo won her weight class and the open class at the brown belt Worlds and got her black belt right on the podium. Less than two years later, the American from Utah was the black belt medium-heavyweight world champion.
Born in Utah on January 30, 2000, she grew up between Sunset and Riverdale, near Ogden. She started at 13, when her father brought her to her brother’s martial arts class under Eduardo Mori, in April 2013. She trained kickboxing, MMA and Jiu-Jitsu before focusing on Jiu-Jitsu, at Zenith BJJ.
Her first year at black belt was a big one. In 2022 she won ADCC in the over 60 kg (132 lb) division, the first American woman to win that division, and No-Gi Worlds, and she also reached the open class final at the gi Worlds, lost to Gabi Pessanha by referee decision.
The gi title came in 2023. At medium-heavyweight she submitted Graciele Fava and Maria Malyjasiak with rear naked chokes and beat Ana Carolina Vieira by referee decision in the semifinal. In the open class she took bronze. According to the IBJJF, the gold made her a world champion in the gi and in no-gi.
In 2024 she took bronze in her weight class and the open class at Worlds and returned to ADCC as the defending champion, finishing fourth in her division. She has not been on the podium at the biggest IBJJF tournaments since.
