Black-belt representing Six Blades Jiu-Jitsu, one of the biggest teams in the sport worldwide, Tyrone Gonsalves is one of the Arte Suave experts who agrees with the affirmation, recently said by Lucas Lepri, that athletes with a good base in the Gi are more dominant in grappling. Victor Hugo, Tyrone’s team partner, is a perfect example. Three-time Jiu-Jitsu world champion with Gi who is currently advancing like a rocket in No Gi tournaments.

“I completely agree with this because the root is Jiu-Jitsu practiced in the Gi. When you take off your Gi to grappling, you just need to adjust the techniques you already perform.”, he says.

In the last competitions he competed in, Tyrone varied between Gi and No Gi tournaments, pushing the boundaries of learning restricted to training. The more you fight, whether Gi or No Gi, the more experience you absorb.

“Having fought a lot of Gi and No Gi recently, I feel like I’ve improved a lot in this part of adjusting the game in the grappling. I felt that now when I put the Gi back on.”, the Six Blades professor says in an interview with VF Comunica.

Tyrone Gonsalves prepares to compete in the Brazilian Nationals, in Barueri

Living from Jiu-Jitsu in French Guiana, Tyrone Gonsalves arrives in Brazil at the end of April to compete in one of the biggest Gi tournaments on the IBJJF calendar: the Brazilian Nationals, traditionally held in Barueri, São Paulo. According to the black-belt, this noticeable evolution of his game will be evident in his fights at the Brasileiro.

“Last year I came third in the division, lost in the referees’ decision and was open class runner-up. I had an excellent campaign in the 2023 season. As I said, I have improved a lot over time and this will be evident in this year’s Brazilian Nationals. Between defeats and victories, the main objective is to always know that there is always something to improve.”, he projects, prepared to put in a lot of sweat in the gi in the Brasileiros camp.
