Jiu-Jitsu is a sport that is spreading significantly in all four corners of the world and the growth of the sport is remarkable. In Maryland, for example, Jiu-Jitsu is expanding more and more through the efforts of the PBJJF, led by Brazilians João Paulo Ferreira and Max Gimenes, multi-champions in the sport.
Renowned competitors, João Paulo and Max are leading the Federation to make it a reference in the region and have already excelled in organizing championships. In an interview with VF Comunica, JP Ferreira analyzes the importance of the PBJJF’s role in promoting Jiu-Jitsu, not only in the city of Baltimore, but throughout the state.
“The PBJJF plays a vital role in the development of the sport on the east coast of the United States. We work tirelessly to promote the safe and ethical practice of Jiu-Jitsu, encouraging the formation of quality academies and offering support to athletes. In addition, our emphasis on education and technical training helps to raise the level of everyone involved,” says JP.
João Paulo points out that the region’s residents have embraced Jiu-Jitsu and this has been reflected in the increase in the number of teams and athletes enrolled in championships.
“The growth of BJJ in Maryland has been remarkable and inspiring. Our local community has shown an incredible commitment to the sport, and we see a steady increase in the number of practitioners and competitors. This is a true demonstration of the power of BJJ as a discipline and lifestyle,” shares the black belt.
JP considers three pillars to be essential in order to maintain the PBJJF’s credibility in the Jiu-Jitsu community and to stand out from the rest when it comes to organizing competitions.
“Our goal is to set ourselves apart in the organization of championships through transparency, professionalism and innovation. We invest in technology to make the experience for competitors and spectators even better. In addition, we are focused on maintaining high refereeing standards and promoting an environment of fair play in our tournaments. We want our championships to be recognized for their quality and integrity, so that the PBJJF is a model for the world,” João Paulo reiterates.
According to the organizer, the PBJJF will spare no effort to provide the best experience for competitors, especially those who will have their first experience of tournaments. The Federation wants to promote events that bring together both beginners and fighters from the elite of professional Jiu-Jitsu.
“This year, the PBJJF has ambitious plans to hold a series of exciting championships. We have scheduled events at all levels, from grassroots competitions to elite tournaments. This will provide opportunities for all BJJ practitioners, regardless of their skill level, to compete and develop,” says JP.
