Who is Eduardo Andrade
Carlos Eduardo Alves de Andrade, known as Eduardo Andrade, is a black belt, instructor and head coach of the grappling team at Templo JJ in São Paulo. In recent years he has become one of the most consistent names on Brazil’s no-gi circuit, with six ADCC Open titles, absolute gold at the ADCC South American Championship in December 2025, and absolute titles at the IBJJF Rio Open No-Gi and São Paulo Open No-Gi.
Born on August 13, 1993, and now 33, he grew up in Mirante da Serra, in rural Rondônia, in a family of modest means. His first contact with the sport came early and far from any academy: “I discovered jiu-jitsu through a friend at 14, very informally, in the yard of his house”. An insecure teenager, as he describes himself, he found in jiu-jitsu a way to build self-esteem.
Several instructors shaped him. “I usually say I am the sum of many instructors and training partners”, he says. In Rondônia he received his blue belt from Cleusso Roma, a Checkmat black belt, and his brown belt from the late instructor known as Bad Boy, a black belt with the Márcio Frank team. His black belt came from Cicero Costha of PSLPB.
With PSLPB Cicero Costha he made the jump to black belt on the gi circuit. In 2018, still a brown belt, he reached the podium at IBJJF Opens in Belo Horizonte, Curitiba and São Paulo. As a black belt in 2019, he placed third at the gi Brazilian Nationals, took bronze at the CBJJ South Americans and silver at the Rio BJJ Pro.
His move to Templo came through an invitation from Professor Jurandir Conceição, the team’s founder. Before accepting, Eduardo went to Cicero Costha to tell him about the decision and thank him for his years on the team. “I have eternal gratitude for everything I lived in that place, even though I often went through hard times”, he says.
From 2022 on, now representing Templo, he focused his career on no-gi. He won the absolute at the IBJJF Rio Open No-Gi in 2023 and did it again at the 2024 São Paulo Open No-Gi, the same year he won the heavyweight division at the Floripa Fall Open No-Gi.
At ADCC events he has won Opens in São Paulo (2025, in the absolute), Balneário Camboriú (2025), Natal and Indaiatuba (2026), plus the titles in Brasília and Argentina he included when he gathered “every time I was an ADCC Open champion”. In December 2025 he won the absolute at the ADCC South American Championship. A month earlier he had reached the final of the ADCC Brazilian Nationals at under 100 kg and lost 6-0 to Henrique Ceconi. In March 2026 he entered the South American trials for the ADCC World Championship in Rio de Janeiro and Indaiatuba, where he won his opening match and lost in the quarterfinals to Ramiro Leon on decision.
In 2024 he competed at AIGA Brazil for the Pirâmide Grappling team and submitted Claudio Ribeiro of Melqui Galvão Team with a heel hook at 1:17 in the team quarterfinal, which Pirâmide won 5-2.
Away from competition, he teaches private lessons, runs an online platform and holds seminars under the Real Jiu-Jitsu brand. In his technique videos he prefers Portuguese names for positions: “It is a personal preference of mine to use Portuguese terms”, he wrote. In 2026 he explained to VF Comunica how ADCC time limits and scoring work.
Today, Eduardo’s main goal is to compete at the ADCC World Championship and, in his words, “show my interpretation of jiu-jitsu on big stages”, both at major tournaments and in superfights. He also wants to help no-gi grow in Brazil: “I believe we have excellent athletes in Brazil who can stand out nationally and internationally in the sport”. To that end, he is setting up his own academy, designed to give young athletes a high-level no-gi training environment.
