Mayssa Bastos

Mayssa Bastos has never lost a match at Worlds as a black belt. She has entered seven editions, won all seven and, in the most recent one, did not let a single opponent reach the end of regulation time. The AOJ athlete from Rio de Janeiro state, who competes at 107 lb, is the winningest roosterweight in history.

All seven titles came at roosterweight, in 2019, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. The tournament was not held in 2020. The first was decided on advantages against Rikako Yuasa. For the rest of the calendar she often alternates between roosterweight and light-featherweight, and she won the Brazilian Nationals all five times from 2022 to 2026.

Mayssa Caldas Pereira Bastos was born in Niterói, Brazil, on October 23, 1997. She spent much of her youth in Maricá, also in the state of Rio de Janeiro, came from judo and started Jiu-Jitsu at age 12 under Jair Court. At purple belt she won Worlds, Pans and Europeans in 2015 and 2016.

She got her black belt from Júlio César Pereira of GF Team on June 4, 2018, on the Worlds podium, after taking silver at brown belt. She was 20. In her first full season, 2019, she won Europeans, Pans, the World Pro and Worlds.

In 2022 she began representing Unity, in New York, and since May 2023 she has trained at Art of Jiu-Jitsu (AOJ) in California, under the Mendes brothers. Outside the IBJJF, she had three ONE Championship matches in 2024 and won all three. In August she took the atomweight submission grappling title against Danielle Kelly, and in December she defended it against the same opponent.

Her 2026 season opened with silver at Europeans, losing the final 2-0 to Thaís Loureiro. Then came gold at Pans, at light-featherweight, and at the Brazilian Nationals, at roosterweight. At Worlds, Mayssa choked Melody Wong from the back, built a 13-point lead and finished Mariana Rolszt with a rear naked choke and, in the final, took Jessica Caroline’s back for a lapel choke in just over two minutes. In September she competed at ADCC in Poland in the 55 kg (121 lb) division and finished fourth.
