Who is Marcelo Garcia
Marcelo Garcia was born in Formiga, a small town in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, on January 17, 1983. He started with karate at 8, walked away from martial arts for a while and came back through judo with coach Fabiano de Souza, who also trained Jiu-Jitsu in the nearby city of Divinópolis and took him to his first classes. He earned his black belt from Fabio Gurgel, at Alliance.
At the IBJJF World Championship he won the middleweight division in 2004, 2006, 2009, 2010 and 2011.
Known as Marcelinho, he built a game tied to the arm drag, the X-guard, the butterfly guard, the guillotine and the rear-naked choke. He was inducted into the IBJJF Hall of Fame in 2014.
