Roger Gracie

Roger Gracie Gomes was born in Rio de Janeiro on September 26, 1981. He is the son of Reila Gracie and Mauricio Gomes, a Rolls Gracie black belt, and the grandson of Carlos Gracie. His uncle, Carlos Gracie Jr., gave him his black belt. Before that he had already won the Worlds at blue belt in 2000, at purple belt in 2001 and at brown belt in 2002, when he took both his weight class and the open class.

At black belt he won his weight class at the IBJJF World Championship seven years in a row, from 2004 to 2010: six times at super-heavyweight and once at ultra-heavyweight, in 2008. In 2007, 2009 and 2010 he also won the open class, known in Brazil as the absolute, for ten world titles in all. He lost five open class finals between 2003 and 2008: one to Marcio “Pé de Pano” Cruz, two to Ronaldo “Jacaré” Souza and two to Xande Ribeiro.

His record shows 76 wins, 62 of them by submission, and seven losses, all on points or advantages. The IBJJF inducted him into its Hall of Fame in 2014. His last Jiu-Jitsu match was on July 23, 2017, at Gracie Pro in Rio de Janeiro, when he submitted Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida. The two had fought to a draw at Metamoris in 2012.
