Who is Ariel Barbosa
Ariel Freitas Barbosa is a four-time Pan Kids champion at just 7 years old. A gray belt at Marcio André Jiu-Jitsu in Phoenix, Arizona, she won the IBJJF’s biggest kids tournament in 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026, every edition she entered, and picked up her 100th win in October 2026.
Her numbers often come from brackets that aren’t hers. When no girls are registered in her division, Ariel moves up in age, as far as the 9-year-old division, and in weight when she needs to. She has also faced boys and beaten them. In 2025, along with the Pan Kids, she won the American Nationals Kids, the Jiu-Jitsu CON Kids in both gi and no-gi, and the No-Gi Pan Kids.
Her 2026 season opened with gold at the European Kids in April, followed by the Brazilian Nationals Kids in June, the American Nationals Kids at the end of June, the Pan Kids in July and two Jiu-Jitsu CON Kids titles in September. Before the Pan Kids, the IBJJF named her among the Marcio André athletes to watch, and after the event it put her on its list of standouts.
Her most recent tournament was the Southwest Classic in Arizona on October 10, where she won four matches and two gold medals.
